MdBio Foundation hosts the ATLAS symposium for students typically underrepresented in STEM. The event is for high school juniors/seniors and college undergraduates. ATLAS provides an important space for students to learn about exciting careers in STEM. Participants will meet peers with similar interests, learn about employment and advancement opportunities, and make connections with STEM professionals. Events like ATLAS serve as a first step to preparing and encouraging students to further pursue their interest in STEM.

Participants meet STEM professionals from a variety of backgrounds and fields through panels and a meet and greet networking session. Participants also talk about college, internship, and career opportunities with representatives from local colleges/universities and STEM companies and organizations. Through these interactions, future STEM leaders learn about real world applications of STEM and receive advice about how to succeed in STEM fields.

The event serves to help students get an idea of the myriad STEM jobs available to them after they graduate. Over 92 percent of past participants report that they know more about possible STEM career options after attending ATLAS. The experience of speaking one on one with STEM professionals is an invaluable opportunity that is not often available to students during traditional educational experiences, and more than 92 percent of participants reported that they feel more comfortable talking to STEM professionals following the ATLAS symposium. Events like ATLAS serve as a first step to preparing and encouraging students to further pursue their interest in STEM.
