Verizon Innovative Learning explorer lab

Coming to Houston ISD in 2018/2019

About

MdBio Foundation is excited to be partnering with Verizon Innovative Learning to bring a new mobile experience to Houston Independent School District schools for the 2018/18 school year.

The Verizon Innovative Learning explorer lab is an entirely new way for middle school students to discover concepts of engineering design. The explorer lab is a shared immersive learning experience that combines movie-quality video, special effects, and hands-on educational gaming to create a learning environment that gets kids excited about science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) – right in the school parking lot.

Onboard a customized motor coach, students experience a futuristic research lab that transports them to environments they can only imagine. The explorer lab was created by Verizon Innovative Learning, the education initiative of the Verizon Foundation. We need more kids to see the world of possibilities available to them.

Mars Discovery Program

The explorer lab Mars Discovery Program curriculum has been developed to meet the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for engineering. Student explorers will experience an interactive tour of the solar system which ends with a landing on Mars. Following the landing, each student will use a tablet to design their own Mars rover.

Explorer lab experiences are designed to fit into a typical 30- to 45-minute class period, but can be extended for longer class periods. Explorer lab activities are led by MdBio’s professional science educators.

Scheduling a visit

Teachers must attend a professional development workshop in to schedule a 2018/19 explorer lab visit for their Houston ISD middle school.  Priority scheduling for the explorer lab will be given to teachers in order of registration for the professional development workshop. Contact the explorer lab team to learn more about scheduling the lab for your school.

The three-part explorer lab program includes an immersive learning experience onboard the explorer lab and classroom engagement and extension in engineering design.  During the six-hour workshop teachers will experience the explorer lab firsthand, learn about companion classroom activities, and schedule your school’s explorer lab visit. The workshop will also offer participants an introduction to teaching engineering design in the classroom and networking with fellow HISD teachers.
